Squat Depth Alarm
Squat Depth Alarm is an Android app that acts as a depth judge for squats, using the phone’s motion sensors and audio cues. It is for lifters who want every rep judged to depth or shallow, with a count kept for each set.

The brief
I wanted squat depth called out loud in real time, the way a judge would, using only the phone a lifter already carries. With the phone in a front pocket or on a side mount, the app reads its motion sensors and plays a different sound going down, at depth and coming up, then tallies reps to depth and shallow reps for the set.
What I built
- Real-time depth detection from the phone’s motion sensors, with an adjustable depth threshold in degrees and an optional calibrate step
- Distinct audio cues for going down, reaching depth and coming up, plus a 5 to 20 second audio countdown before each set
- Rep counter that separates reps to depth from shallow reps and shows a success rate for each set
- Saved set history with date, rep counts and percentage, stored on the device and never sent to a server
- Hands-free SQUAT and RACK voice commands using Android’s on-device speech recognizer, with no audio recorded, stored or sent
- Interface in 10 languages, including English, Spanish, Chinese, Hindi, Arabic and Urdu
- In-app ads with a one-time Remove Ads purchase through Google Play
- Landing page, privacy policy and terms of service hosted at madebyrick.com/squat-depth-alarm
